It’s not at all uncommon for people to return from a vacation a few pounds heavier than they were before they left.

However, it doesn’t have to be this way.

#1 Get Your Steps In

One of the easiest ways to stay in shape while on vacation is by walking everywhere you can.

When you visit places like New York City, you can easily get your steps in just by seeing some of the main tourist attractions.

You could even take time on the plane ride to plan out which sites are relatively close to each other.

Another easy way to add steps and cardio while on vacation is by taking the stairs instead of the elevator or walking up the escalator instead of riding up or down.

#2 Mind Your Alcohol

One of the things we as adults look forward to on vacation is indulging in a few alcoholic beverages while relaxing on the beach or partying the night away.

However, it can be incredibly easy to forget how full of calories these drinks can be.

Having a few drinks over several days will add up really quickly.

Did you know champagne has 100 calories for every 3.4 ounces?

Having a few drinks over the duration of your holiday shouldn’t set you back too far, but try to be mindful of the calories in the drinks you are consuming.

#3 Fun Activities

Whether your vacation is in the tropics, on a cruise, or to see the Northern Lights in Iceland, there will almost certainly be some sort of activity to get your body moving.

It’s worth looking into the location of your destination to see what’s available.

Be mindful of your portions and if you’re on vacation with friends or family and find yourself wanting to try a foreign dessert or dish, try splitting it between the table rather than having it to yourself.

#5 Rest!

You may be surprised, but getting adequate rest while on vacation can aid in your bodies health.

Vacation isn’t for burning yourself out but rather to rest from the rigors of your daily life.

If you can, try not to sleep in too much on vacation either as this can throw your body off your regular sleep schedule and can, in turn, make you feel fatigued.

With all of the food, wine, and relaxation on offer, it can be easy to pack on the pounds while on vacation.
